Khumār Barabankvi (1919 - 1999) (Urdu: خمار بارہ بنكوی ) was an Urdu poet and lyricist from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India. His real name was Mohammed Haidar Khan, but he wrote under the takhallus (pen name/ nom de plume) of Khumār, which means intoxication. The word comes from the Arabic root 'Khmr' which means alcoholic wine.[1] Khumar has written some famous songs for Hindi films like Shahjahan, Baradari, 'Saaz aur Awaaz', Love and God etc. He was indeed closely associated with famed composers like Naushad, a fact not as well-known to many. He wrote all the songs for the film 'Saaz aur Awaaz' produced by Naushad in 1966 and wrote the songs again for the film 'Love and God' in 1986 for which Naushad again composed music.
Khumār died in 1999.[1]

bujh gayaa dil hayaat baaqii hai
bujh gayaa dil hayaat baaqii hai ; chhup gayaa chaand raat baaqii hai
hal-e-dil un se kah chuke sau baar ; ab bhii kahane kii baat baaqii hai
raat baaqii thii jab vo bichhade the ; kaT gaii umr raat baaqii hai
ishq main ham nibhaa chuke sab se ai 'Khumar'; bas ek zaalim hayaat baaqii hai
ai maut! unhe.n bhulaaye zamaane guzar gaye
ai maut! unhen bhulaaye zamaane guzar gaye ; aa jaa ki zahar khaaye zamaane guzar gaye
O jaane vaale aa ki tere intazaar men ; raste ko ghar banaaye zamaane guzar gaye
Gam hai na ab Khushii hai na ummiid hai na yaas ; sab se najaat paaye zamaane guzar gaye
kyaa laayaq-e-sitam bhii nahii ab main doston ; patthar bhii ghar men aaye zamaane guzar gaye
jaane bahaar phuul nahii aadamii huun main ; aa jaa ki muskuraaye zamaane guzar gaye
sar mein vo intazaar kaa saudaa nahii rahaa ; dil par vo dharkano kii hukuumat nahii rahii
paiham tavaaf-e-kuuchaa-e-jaanaa ke din gaye; pairon men chalane phirane kii taaqat nahii rahii
allaah jaane maut kahaa mar gaii 'Khumar'; ab mujh ko zindagii kii zaruurat nahii rahii
